Crash CD

Izaac Pellerin

In the beginning of the crash CD I was pretty sure I knew what would happen as the people left the party. The car full of teenagers crashed into a tree. In the CD when your character wakes up you are in a hospital, the councilor comes and tells you that you have had a head injury and you need to answer some questions to help them find out who you are because you can't remember. This is how I answered some of the questions.

I am a 16 year old male. If I saw someone drinking and I thought they might drive I would be likely to try to stop them from driving.

I have never driven after smoking marijuana and I have never ridden in a car with someone who has been drinking or smoking marijuana. Another way I keep safe is by wearing my seat belt often.

If a person uses drugs, they have a 50/50 chance for someone to get hurt. There is also a 50/50 chance you would total your car if you used drugs and drove. Also, it is slightly likely that you would be arrested if you drove after using drugs.

After you answer the questions the councilor tells you you have to stay in the hospital. She says that they know there were other people in the car and that a biker that was hit.

Mike (a high school volunteer) tells you that there is a lot of responsibility that comes with getting your license but then he has to leave. He gives you three papers to look at. The first one is interviews with a drunk driver, the second is of an interview with a victim, and the third is about some parents that have lost their kid in a crash.

Then you visit the Sensation Seeker Poster. It is about Adrenalin junkies. The poster page then asks if you like those kinds of activities. I said sometimes. They go on to say that these kind of activities can be dangerous. You have to pick your when and where of involved risks.

The last poster is the Safe Alternatives Poster. It talks about what you should do if one of your friends tries to drive drunk. The first thing to do is to get the keys. Then the next thing to do is try to find another driver. Next, you could try to delay the driver. If that doesn’t work try another angle like asking if they are tired. You could let them go but you shouldn’t let them do this.

Next I went to the lawyers office. She said there was a lot of drunk driving cases. I read the facts and picked the involuntary manslaughter scenario. Then they explained the verdict (60 years in jail).

The Cost Calculator determines how much you might pay for a traffic violation. It ended up to be around 4,000 dollars.

After the lawyer I went to the doctors office. He said he had to leave but to look around his office. When I looked around I saw a poster called the Effects of Alcohol on the Brain. The effects were that is slowed messages to the brain and slurred the voice. Also drinking alcohol blurred vision and impaired judgment.

Another poster was called Three Impacts in a Crash. These were that the car hits an object, that the body hit’s the car and finally that organs hit the inside of the body.

This leads to brain injuries that cause you to have a hard time concentrating. You forget things, lose sense of taste, have difficulty with motor skills, and have mood swings.

Another poster listed the Effects of Marijuana. The effects include misjudging speed, misjudging braking, it affects perceptions and impairs judgment. 80% of teens that die, die in car crashes. More than any other age group.

Once you get to the police station the cop starts talking but then he has to leave. He gives you some activities. One activity is learning how to spot drunk drivers. 35% of drunk drivers have their headlights off when they should be on. 45% have slow responses when driving. 55% of drunk drivers follow the car in front of them too close. 65% weave when driving. 35% of drunk drivers turn too abruptly and 45% drift out of their lane. 55% swerve and 65% make their turns too wide. If you are in a car with someone who has been drinking and does any of these things convince them to stop.

If you get arrested you first get pulled over. You must provide the information the police officer asks you for. If you are arrested, the police officer will read you your Miranda rights. You will be taken to the police station for pictures and fingerprints and your blood alcohol content will be tested. You will have fines to pay. Upon release, you are given a court date and you may have a trial.

In the end I was the bicyclist. I was hit by the car full of teens who where on their way back from a party. One of the teens died. My view on drinking and driving is that there are too many crashes that involve drunk drivers which is so senseless. If you know that you like to drink and you drive a car just bring a sleeping bag and spend the night or have someone drive you home. People should avoid the road at those times when there are a lot of drunk drivers. There were a lot of good lessons in the CD.
